The headwaters of the Dolores River are in the Lizard Head Wilderness and parts of the San Juan National Forest. It winds it's way out of Dolores County into Montezuma County and there, is impounded in McPhee Reservoir. After the Dolores flows out of the bottom of McPhee Reservoir it snakes through 4 more counties before crossing into Utah and joins up with the Colorado.
