Sheepman Abel McKenzie and cattleman Zack Rainford were best friends growing up, but now, in 1887 Montana Territory, they've become mortal enemies battling over the same grazing land. When one of McKenzie's sheep herders is killed and the investigation into the homicide receives only cursory review, their feud threatens to throw the people of Meriwether County into a bloody range war. Deputy U.S. Marshal Merlin Fanshaw is sent to stop the range war before it starts, but his job is complicated by a corrupt sheriff, a mysterious range detective, and a secret romance between McKenzie's son and Rainford's daughter.
